What is Nona Works?
A three-day biohackathon event to bring together industry and academic parties in the open-source synthetic biology community. “Nona Works” is focused on community building, idea execution, and education. Our theme for this hackathon is Security in Biotechnology ranging from the security that protects our healthcare data to biosecurity practices ensuring that pathogenic sequences become classified information.

Preliminary Timeline
Day 1: May 19th

- 4:30 – 5:15 p.m. – Registration: Coffee / snacks, an informal area set up to meet/greet each other

- 5:30 – 6:15 – Introduction/Daily Kickoff: Greeting and Presentation by George Johnson
- 6:15 – Begin 4 hour poster challenge

- 8:00 – 9:00 – Technical Briefings – what software tools are being developed/used now in academia and industry
- 9:30 – 10:15 – Closing Remarks – Insights about the first day & Poster Challenge Close for Judging and Review
- 10:20 – 12:00 – Snacks, Presentations, and Games will be held throughout the night for entertainment
Day 2: May 20th

- 6:00 – 7:00 – Closing: At the end of the day teams share their progress and plan for the final day

Challenge Problems
Want to host your own challenge problem? Reach out to sponsor a prize and reward someone for hard work
- Java/Python Security Challenge: Participants are challenged to upgrade an existing application’s Java version to Java 17 or Python version to 3.11, with a $500 bounty for the winning solution.
- GUI Rookie Challenge: This challenge is open to undergraduate college teams who will present an innovative technology change they developed, with a $100 bounty for the winning team.
- Product Design Poster Challenge: A $75 bounty is offered to non-technical individuals with a creative idea for a new security product that disrupts the industry. Participants will have 4 hours to work on their poster and awards will be presented at the end.
- Friends Among Strangers Challenge: This challenge is designed to bring people together in a successful cohort, where individuals who meet face-to-face for the first time at Nona Works can earn a $50 bounty for successfully completing the challenge.
